November 2024 O'Brien Garden and Trees

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mike O'Brien Sr. and Mike O'Brien Jr. of O'Brien Garden and Trees for generously sharing their extensive expertise with our garden club members. This program attracted our most enthusiastic members, who were eager to finally ask in-depth, scientific questions of this knowledgeable cultivation team. We are grateful for the insights they provided and for the innovative spirit they bring to our community. We appreciate the O'Briens' willingness to share their knowledge. As Mike Sr. emphasized, "Tree pruning is the most important maintenance." O'Brien Garden and Trees will be offering a Tree Maintenance Class this spring, so be sure to check their Facebook page for updates on the class schedule.

October 2024 Seed Library Community Resource

Thank you to Ann Gravier, Jeanette Pedginski, and MaryAnn Dyke for their presentation on the Soldotna Seed Library and its vital role as a community resource that provides free seeds and gardening education. For the 2024 season, the library prepared over 2,500 seed packets and served 181 patrons, distributing 817 packets. Each patron can take up to 10 seed packets, which are locally adapted varieties to enhance biodiversity and community resilience. The speakers also outlined the library's 2024 budget, which included a generous $640 grant from the Central Peninsula Garden Club, along with a list of start-up expenses. The volunteer group meets weekly on Thursdays at 10:30am at The Goods, just show up to help package seeds.  To further improve its offerings and engage more residents in sustainable gardening practices, the library is seeking community feedback through a survey. Your involvement is essential for enhancing this valuable community resource!

September 2024 Root Cellars and Cold Storage

Thank you for joining us for Root Cellars and Cold Storage on September 21, 2024! The event, featured a panel discussion with local gardening experts Lee Bowman, Kay Gardener, and Jacki Michels. We have put their slides on our Garden Resources Page

They shared their personal experiences and tips for preserving harvests using root cellars and cold storage techniques. This was a great opportunity for gardeners to ask questions, learn from the panelists, and exchange their own storage strategies. It was an enriching afternoon of community learning and sharing.
